We’ve maintained the core functionality of these tools, but have added some new features that we hope will make them more useful for you. If you use English as your AdWords interface language you may have noticed that you already have access to these tools, and availability to all English advertisers as well as other languages will be rolling out over the next few weeks

Continuing this months look at Google’s May 2009 updates that are changing the face of keyword research I give you the Google Wonder Wheel.

What is it?

The Wonder Wheel allows you to see related keywords around your initial search term in a visual form.

It gets even better – Click on any keyword phrase (yes, the terms are click-able) on the “spoke” of the wheel and watch it expand. It digs deeper into the initial search term, to discover more keywords that are related to the original search query.

You will find that this tool is not only useful in finding semantic relationships between keywords but it’s ADDICTIVE.

Getting to the Wonder Wheel

The next time you do a search on Google look for a link called Show options;

Click on Show Options. On the left hand side of page you will see;

If you have ever tried categorizing keywords on a spread sheet and sort them by how they relate to each other then you know this can really tax the mind. You will be pleasantly surprised how easy it will be to find more keyword phrases (visually) that are related to your market.

Click on the Wonder Wheel link and start digging.

Don’t forget to thank Google!

Have you ever tried to create a keyword list with with local modifiers? If you have, then you know this can be a daunting task. The list can get pretty big and hard to manage.

In the spirit of the extending the Freeline I wanted to share with you a online keyword tool (one of many) that will take a 3hr job and turn it into 5 minutes job.

Where to start

You can use this local keyword generator to create key phrases that target your local market.

Basically, when your are generating keywords and phrases that target your market you want to use what is called a key modifier. In the case of a local area you would use the city(s), state and zip code(s).

Step 1: Enter your zip code, radius, core keywords and phrases:

So for example lets say your core keywords are apartment mover, apartment movers, apartment moving and your geographical area is in Denver.

Step 2: Set the parameters for your report:

You can define city, state name, state abbreviation and reverse the report to reflect location keyword or keyword location. Don’t forget to use other modifiers such as uptown, downtown, crosstown, etc. that are common in your area.

The results

As you can see the tool will give you all local areas around you specified by the radius (miles) you entered in step one. The list generated for just these three terms contained 1800 key phrases.

What to do next

Once you have gotten your list together, head off to a traffic estimator tool and dig deeper to see if there is actually any traffic, according to Google, for your terms.

Tip: Surround your keywords with quotes when looking for estimated traffic numbers.

To your SEO success!

I’ve been playing with the new options that Google has added to their search. For those who don’t know, Google has quietly released a Search Options panel which is a collection of tools that let you slice and dice your results and generate different views to find what you need. You can get to the panel by first doing a search from the home page of Google. Once you are presented with results look fora link that says Show options.

Like I said, I’ve been playing with it all week and I like it. There is a ton of information on this one page. Things like videos , forums and reviews which are all related to the search term you enter.

Also you can see any recent data including things from the last 24hrs to as far back as a year. I like the 24hr view as it shows whats happening NOW.

You can look at all this data in a standard view, which is the view you see when you get there, or you can view Related searches, Wonder Wheel (more on this later) and a time line, which is any news that’s happening that is related to the search term.

I always like finding new tools. This one could be very useful to people who don’t have commercial software like most research freaks like me have. The good thing about the options panel is that a good portion of the data you need to identify you local competition is right there on one page. Not to mention the additional search terms that are related to your market that you may not thought of.

See you on Google!
